This Morgan was original fitted with a 4 speed Ford gearbox. I converted
to the Ford 5 speed standard T9 gearbox in 2001. It has been great with
the fifth 0,82 ratio and 4.1:1 rear end though the first and second gear
always has been much too short.
With the very high power to day, you hardly can stay a fraction of a
second in the first gear, and the second was to high to start out with.
I decided to order the new 5 speed 'Heavy Duty Synchro
Gearbox' design from
BGH with the longest 1st and 2nd gears. It is rated to 280HP, but the
Morgan is a light weight car so probably it can take more.
The BGH E8 is build in the Ford T9 box.

The
Rear-end is the: New 4.1:1 ratio from
Spicer Axles Australia. Former Australian BTR Engineering, former
Borg Warner 9 Bolt Rear-end. Rated to 295HP/229kW 435nm/320lbft in
practice it should be capable of 500HP.

The below table shows the speed in 1-5th gear at 6500 RPM for
the old and new configurations.
As you can see in the second gear
1) Old configuration with 185x65 R15 and Ford std T9: 94,3 km/h
2) New configuration with 215x60 R15 and BGH E8: 109,1 km/h
The new configuration made it very fast 0-62mph (0-100km/h):
3.9 sec.
Better grip with the 215X60 rear tyres, though grip and gear shift is
still a big challenge.
